MGOLF | Former Dons Henry Chung to Play in Safeway Open

SAN FRANCISCO – Former University of San Francisco men's golfer Henry Chung '18 won Monday's qualifier and will compete in this week's PGA Tour event, the Safeway Open, located at the Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, Calif.

In order to participate in the Monday qualifier, he had to shoot a 66 at an event last Friday. At the Monday qualifier he shot 5-under, which placed him in a three-way playoff. Chung birdied two of the four holes in the playoff, winning the right to advance to the Safeway Open, set to be Chung's first PGA Tour event.

Chung's strong play in the qualifier bested a field that boasted 12 PGA wins, 29 Korn Ferry Tour wins, 3 European Wins, over 3,728 PGA starts and $108.8 million in PGA earnings. Individually, one player from the field had over 400 PGA Tour starts, two have made over 300, and five others have compiled over 200 PGA tour starts to their resume.

"People are so fixated with taking it deep on Monday qualifiers, adding unnecessary pressure, so I just decided to take it one shot at a time and just trust my game," said Chung following his round. "Two years ago, I was out here watching my buddy, Michael Kim playing. On Thursday, I get to tee it up. It's an exciting opportunity for myself and to show USF's golf program is on the rise."

Chung, who played for the Dons from 2014-18, finished his career at USF appearing in 32 events, his last at the NCAA Byron Regional in 2018 where he finished tied for 70th. Currently, he is playing on The Bo Tour, a small professional golf tour in Southern California. Chung has several Bo Tour victories and is currently third on their money list.

Chung is the second current or former Don who has qualified for a PGA Tour sponsored event this year. Earlier this summer, sophomore Matthew Anderson qualified to play at the RBC Canadian Open in June, where he missed the cut.
