MTN | Dons Finish 3rd at Pacific Valley Tennis Championships

FRESNO, Calif. - The Pacific Valley Tennis Championships came to an end today for the University of San Francisco men's tennis team. The Dons finished the tournament in third out of eight teams.

"This was a great weekend for the Dons," said assistant coach JT Sundling. "It is always tough bouncing back after a loss and we were able to do that today. We need to learn from our mistakes and take the positives away from the weekend in order to keep moving forward."

DAY ONE
MATCH VS. HAWAII

The Dons started the tournament with a 4-2 match win against Hawaii. 

The match began with singles where the Dons secured wins from Ori Maior (6-4, 6-2) and Phuc Huynh (6-2, 6-2) to give USF a 2-0 lead. On court No. 6, USF dropped a match, but Paul Giraud extended the lead to 3-1 with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win. 

It all came down to Nitzan Ricklis and his match. Ricklis won his first set 6-3 but fell in the next set 5-7 to take his match into the tiebreaker set. Ultimately, Ricklis defeated his opponent in the final set 6-2 and the Dons secured the win over Hawaii.

  5. Huynh def. Simão Telo Alves; 6-2, 6-2
  6. Tristan Martins def. Johan Garpered; 6-3, 6-2

MATCH VS. WICHITA STATE
In the second match of the day, the Dons faced Wichita State, which ended in a 4-0 loss.

In the traditional order, the match started with doubles. USF dropped the first match on court No. 3, but Johnson and Phuc came back with a close 7-6 win. The doubles point went to Wichita State however when Maior and Giraud fell 7-5 in their match.

The Dons couldn't gain momentum in singles and Wichita state clinched the win over USF after dropped matches from Johnson, Giraud and Ricklis. The rest of singles went unfinished.

  2. Lago def. Giraud; 7-6, 6-1
  3. Ovil vs. Maior; 6-7, 5-4(unfinished)
  4. Latinovic def. Johnson; 6-3, 6-1
  5. Frosa vs. Huynh; 5-7, 6-5(unfinished)
  6. Alex Richards vs. David Woodland; 7-6, 2-3(unfinished)

DAY TWO
MATCH VS. GONZAGA

In the final day of the tournament, the Dons finished with a 4-2 win against Gonzaga.

USF started the match by securing the doubles point with wins from Ricklis and Garpered (6-1), and Huynh and Johnson (6-3). Maior and Giraud's match went unfinished at 5-1.

Giraud (6-2, 6-1) and Huynh (6-3, 6-2) extended the Dons lead with wins on their courts, but Gonzaga recorded two match wins on courts No. 6 and No. 3. On Ricklis' court, his match went into the tiebreaker set where he secured the 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 win and clinched the 4-2 win for the Dons.

UP NEXT
The Dons will be back in action on Friday, March 20 at the Marin Tennis Club for a match against the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Time is set for 5 p.m. PT.
