WTEN | Dons Fall to Golden Bears to Begin 2021 Season

BERKELEY, Calif. – The University of San Francisco women's tennis team made its 2021 debut on Friday, traveling to the Hellman Tennis Complex today where they took on No 19 California.  The Golden Bears (3-1) did not drop a set as they defeated the Dons 7-0.

"I felt today that just successfully starting our season was a big win," said head coach Peter Bartlett. "We did a good job competing against a top-20 team. It was great for our team to see this level for our first match to set the bar and immediately get back to work on some of the things we learned. We haven't played against Cal in the last five years so getting back to playing against these nationally ranked programs is what we have been building up to. I was proud of how fought today and I'm pleased with our attitudes and mindsets. I feel this can only lead to better things for our future matches and season."

USF's (0-1) day began when Caragh Courtney and Arianna Capogrosso and Chico Mushika and Maria Martinez Vaquero fell 2-6. Mya Bui and Rita Colyer fell 3-6 giving the doubles point to California.

In the singles matches the Dons did not fare much better against the Golden Bears.  Cal took a 3-0 lead in the match after Vaquero and Bui fell 1-6, 2-6 and 2-6, 2-6, respectively.  The Bears took the match when Capogrosso fell to Cal's Erin Richardson 2-6, 2-6.  Colyer, playing in the three-spot battled in second set, but fell to No. 26 Valentina Ivanov 2-6, 4-6.  Mushika fell 1-6, 5-7 followed by Courtney who fell 3-6, 3-6.

Two Dons made their USF debut today, Caragh Courtney, a junior from Delaware and freshman Maria Martinez Vaquero from Asturias, Spain.
