- In their first game in front of their home crowd since Feb. 2020, the Dons exploded offensively on Tuesday night in their season-opening win over LIU as USF cruised past the Sharks 98-64. Overall, four different Dons scored in double figures: Khalil Shabazz (16), Jamaree Bouyea (14), Julian Rishwain (14) and Yauhen Massalski. As a unit, USF dominated LIU in multiple categories: points in the paints (36-25), points off turnovers (25-5), second chance points (13-1) and bench points (38-25). Notably, USF shot an impressive 53.2 percent from the field and 40.0 percent while limiting LIU to 42.1 percent from the floor and 36.4 percent from deep.
- With the win over the Sharks, the scored 90+ points at home for the first time since a 107-62 win over Long Beach State on Dec. 10, 2020 as USF improved to 4-0 when scoring 90+ points under head coach Todd Golden.
- Joining the Dons as transfers this past summer, Patrick Tapé, Gabe Stefanini and Volodymry Markovetskyy all shined in their debuts for the green and gold on Tuesday. Individually, Tapé tallied 9 points, 5 rebounds, 4 steals and 4 assists while also sinking 5 of his 6 free throws, Stefanini added 9 points, 2 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals on 3-of-5 from distance while Markovetskyy provided a spark down low with 8 points, 4 rebounds (3 offensive) and 1 assist on 4-of-6 shooting.
- Making the trip from Prairire View, Tex., the Panthers faced fellow WCC foe Saint Mary's in their season opener on Tuesday night, falling to the Gaels 87-68 at University Credit Union Pavilion. Despite the loss, Jawaun Daniels (15 pts), D'Rell Roberts (15 pts) and DeWayne Cox (10 pts) all scored in double figures.
- As a team, the Panthers shot 49.0 percent overall (25-51) from the floor and 44.4 percent (8-18) from beyond-the-arc. Notably, PVAMU led the Gaels in points off turnovers (26-13) and fast break points (12-8).
- Prior to the season, Daniels was named the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) Preseason Player of the Year while the Panthers were the consensus pick to finish second in the conference standings behind Texas Southern. Last season, the PVAMU finished 13-0 in conference play to win the regular season league title for the second consecutive year. For Daniels, the 6'7" guard led the team in scoring (15.4 points per game), a mark that was sixth in the SWAC. Daniels also ranked ninth in rebounds per game with 6.1, second in field percentage (.541) and eighth in three-point field goals per game (1.7).
- Head coach Byron Smith returns to the bench for his sixth season at the helm of the Panthers as the team returns eight letter winners from last year's squad.
- Thursday's matchup showdown marks the first meeting all-time between the two programs.
