LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Grinding their way through a strong non-conference schedule, the USF Dons women's basketball team (5-4) broke their skid with an impressive 78-63 victory over the USC Trojans (5-3) at the Galen Center Sunday afternoon.
Ioanna Krimili poured in 29 points as she was instrumental in sparking the Dons offense early in the game.
Amalie Langer had 13 points on a very efficient 5-for-9, while
Kennedy Dickie and
Claudia Langarita each had double digit points off the bench and played stout defense against USC's tall front court.Â
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- The Trojans got out of the gates hot as they raced out to a 10-0 lead to begin the contest.
- USF responded with a great second quarter, as Krimili's hot shooting helped neutralize the Trojans as the Dons' defense settled into the game as well. San Francisco entered halftime with a three-point advantage after scoring 28 points and making more than half of their three-point shots.
- Overcoming their slow start required USF to play stingy defense and take advantage of their quickness and shot-making ability, and they were able to do that over the final three quarters against USC.
- After taking the lead late in the first half, USF didn't look back as they built upon their lead throughout the second half to come away with the 78-63 win in Los Angeles.Â
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Krimili had another stellar night shooting the ball, as she scored over 25 points for the third time in nine games, as she finished with 29 points, five assists, two rebounds and two steals against USC.
- Langer was great on both sides of the ball as she scored 13 points, grabbed three rebounds, blocked a shot and came up with a steal to go along with stellar defense.
- Dickie played tremendously as she had 11 points and six rebounds to go along with an assist during the victory.
- Langarita made multiple clutch shots off the bench as she finished with 12 points and three rebounds on Sunday.Â
CATCHING UP WITH COACH GOODENBOUR:
"What a fantastic team win. We have a tough stretch of road games in December so this was great to pull off a victory over a Pac-12 opponent. Io got us going with her hot shooting and then we got some confidence in ourselves. I thought Amalie played really good defense on their best scorer, while Claudia and Kennedy gave us really productive minutes off the bench. Overall it was a really nice team win."
UP NEXT:
The Dons continue their swing through Southern California as they will travel south for a meeting with the Cal State Fullerton Titans on Tuesday night. USF won the most recent meeting between the two squads at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center during the 2019-20 non-conference season.
