WTEN | Spartans Edge Dons in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif. — The University of San Francisco women's tennis team dropped a close match on the road Friday, going all the way down to a three-set decision in the final singles match, as host San Jose State downed the Dons, 4-3, at the Spartan Tennis Complex.

The match was close from the start, with the doubles point coming down to a tiebreaker in the No. 2 matchup. San Jose State's Alba Pedrero Galindo and Lara Marco Mas defeated the Dons' Arianna Capogrosso and Rita Colyer, 7-6 (7-3). Caragh Courtney and Maria Martinez Vaquero beat SJSU's Tamara Culibrk and Irena Muradyan, 6-4, at No. 3 doubles.

San Jose State (3-0) jumped out to a big 3-0 match lead with early singles wins at No. 1 and No. 3. San Francisco (3-2) came back, though, with consecutive victories at No. 2, No. 5 and No. 4 singles, to even the match. Martinez Vaquero swept Rozalina Youseva, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2. Capogrosso came from behind to beat Culibrk, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, at No. 5. And Chiho Mushika beat Savannah Sendar in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, at No. 4.

The match was decided at No. 6 singles, where SJSU's Marco Mas came back from being down 1-0 in the match to beat Courtney in three sets, 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

"We lost a really tight match to a good SJSU team in some tough, windy conditions," said San Francisco head coach Peter Bartlett. "We fought hard as a team, but we needed to do a better job reducing errors and commit a bit more to our initial game plans in order to pull this one out.

"We are still gaining experience and these close matches will make us tougher in the end. The positive is we know we can do it but we will need to regroup for another quality match against Fresno State on Sunday."

The Dons host Fresno State at 3 p.m. at the Olympic Club.
