WTEN | Dons Continue to Roll with Win over Pacific

SAN FRANCISCO — The University of San Francisco women's tennis team continued its roll on Saturday, winning its third match in a row and second consecutive West Coast Conference match with a 5-2 victory over Pacific at the Olympic Club.

The Dons (9-4, 2-1 WCC) took the doubles point and won four singles matches, including each of the No. 4-6 matchups, to win for the sixth time in their last eight matches. For the Tigers, (4-8, 1-3 WCC), it was their third loss in their last four matches, as they fell to 1-3 in conference play.

"We had another hard-fought conference match and were fortunate to come out on top," said San Francisco head coach Peter Bartlett. "It was a nice momentum boost to win the doubles point. We then got good momentum from Chiho Mushika and Ari Capogrosso to get us a couple of early singles wins."

San Francisco got three consecutive singles wins – all finishing successively – to seal the match win. Mushika got the Dons their first singles win of the day at the No. 4 spot to put them ahead, 2-1, in the match after Pacific had tied things up with a win at No. 1 singles. She was nearly perfect against the Tigers' Danielle Zamora, winning 6-0, 6-1. Mushika was also key in getting the Dons the doubles point, clinching it with a 6-3 win at the No. 3 spot with partner Maria Martinez Vaquero.

Arianna Capogrosso made it a 3-1 match score with a 6-4, 6-1, win at No. 5 singles. And Caragh Courtney sealed it with a sweep at No. 6, beating Pacific's Ella Leroy, 6-1, 7-6(3).

"Caragh Courtney did a great job clinching at the No. 6 position to get us the victory," said Bartlett. "We also got an additional win from Mya Bui at the No. 2 position. Our team has been doing a great job gaining confidence during these close matches. More to come as we take on two tough opponents this next weekend."

San Francisco next goes on the road to the Pacific Northwest to face Portland on Friday and Gonzaga on Saturday.
