SAN FRANCISCO – Third year head coach Todd Golden is pleased to announce the addition of Michael Plank to his coaching staff. Plank joins the staff as an assistant coach and will oversee recruiting for the Dons.
A Northern California native, this is Plank's second time working on the Hilltop, having served as a graduate assistant at USF in the 2012-13 season. Plank spent the last two seasons on former USF head coach Kyle Smith's staff at Washington State, serving as the recruiting coordinator for the Cougars.
"I am very happy to add Mike to our staff," said Golden. "He's proven over his career in college basketball to be a tireless and very successful recruiter. He's raised the profile of every program he's been a part of, and will do so here with us at San Francisco. He has strong Northern California ties having grown up in Stockton, and his wife Tina has a degree from the University of San Francisco's nursing school."
Over his last two seasons in Pullman, Plank oversaw a recruiting effort that was ranked 38th and 51st nationwide respectively according to 247Sports.com, including three prospects that rank in the top-seven all-time in Washington State history.
A tireless worker, Plank was the top assistant at CCSF under head coach Justin Labagh prior to his time at WSU. In 2018-19, he was instrumental in guiding the Rams to a 31-2 overall record, falling just short of claiming the California state title after taking home the Cost Conference championship in the regular season.
His guidance helped then-conference MVP in Malcolm Johnson break out, averaging 13.4 points and 8.4 rebounds per game. In addition, three other Rams players were named to the All-Coast Conference First Team with a fourth student-athlete earning second team honors.
Plank has also made coaching stops at the professional level. Prior to his time at CCSF, Plank was part of the Milwaukee Bucks Training Camp and Mini Camp Support Staff that assisted head coach Jason Kidd with all team practices and workouts. Additionally, Plank assisted in the organization's evaluation, scouting, and preparation of Bucks' players for heading into the NBA season. In 2018, Plank assisted head coach Jeff Van Gundy at the FIBA USA Men's National Team camp in Santa Cruz, Calif.
On the AAU circuit, Plank was the head coach of the 17U Nike EYBL AAU Portland Basketball Club. While in charge, Plank coached and recruited top-tier prep talent in the Northwest and throughout the West Coast, including three ESPN Top 100 talents. As a coach, Plank coordinated and implemented player development program for all of his players while showcasing his players' talents for college recruiting.
From 2014-16, Plank worked on the bench as an assistant coach at Portland State where he took the lead on the Vikings recruitment.
Prior to his stint in the Rose City, her spent a season an assistant coach at Casper College in Wyoming. He also worked one year as a graduate assistant at USF (2012-13), and three years as lead assistant and recruiting coordinator at his alma mater, Willamette (2008-12).
Plank was the head coach of the Portland Hoops Kings (South) AAU team from 2006-2008. His teams compiled a 37-8 record.
Plank was an assistant coach for the Costa Rican National Team at the Central American Games during the summer of 2015. He joined former college teammate, Josh Erickson, who is the head coach of team Costa Rica.
A 2006 graduate of Willamette with a degree in Sociology, Plank played four years of basketball and football for the Bearcats. He also played one season of baseball. In 2016, Plank earned his masters in educational leadership from Concordia University.
Plank and his wife, Cristina, have one daughter, Myla Christi, who was born in April of 2019.
