USF Comes Up Short Against San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Heading back on the road for the first time since the new year, the USF Dons women's basketball team (6-8, 0-2) dropped their first road game of the conference season to the San Diego Toreros (9-4, 1-0) Saturday afternoon at Jenny Craig Pavillion by a 65-56 final score. 

Jasmine Gayles led the way for USF with 21 points, eight rebounds and an assist coming off the bench, while starting point guard Jessica McDowell-White once again played the entire 40 minutes of game action as she scored 12 points and dished out four assists. 

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • The Dons got off to a fast start to begin the game as they won the first quarter 20-15, after receiving 10 quick points from McDowell-White.
  • USD settled into the game more in the middle portion of action as they were able to retake the lead heading into halftime with a five point advantage over USF.
  • The Toreros pulled away further in the fourth quarter of play on their way to the 65-56 victory at home.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Gayles continued her tremendous season by scoring 21 points and corralling eight rebounds for the Dons as the first player off the bench.
  • McDowell-White showed tremendous stamina and determination playing the entire game for the second time in three days as she scored 12 points, dished out four assists and grabbed two rebounds. 
  • Making her second consecutive start, freshman forward Claudia Langarita had a solid performance as she scored 11 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists against USD. 
UP NEXT:
USF will now turn their attention to the Portland Pilots (10-3, 0-1) as they will travel north for their third WCC matchup of the early conference season. The Pilots have played one game so far on their WCC schedule as they lost at home to Gonzaga 76-65.
