LAS VEGAS, Nev. - Knocking off one of the nation's few remaining undefeated teams, the University of San Francisco men's basketball team (9-3) took down UNLV (10-1), 75-73, in dramatic fashion on Saturday afternoon at Thomas & Mack Center following a go-ahead three-pointer from
Tyrell Roberts with less than seven seconds remaining in regulation.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Through the first few minutes of action, UNLV took control to begin the ballgame, but a three-pointer from Marcus Williams at the 16:00 mark gave USF their first lead of the afternoon, 9-8.
- In a back-and-forth first half, the Runnin' Rebels regained their advantage for the following nine plus minutes, but the Dons kept pace with UNLV throughout the stretch as they never trailed by more than eight (28-20).
- With 6:16 remaining in the half, Khalil Shabazz converted on a layup in the paint as the green and gold jumped back on top, 29-28.
- Through the final six minutes before halftime, the Runnin' Rebels went on to outscore USF, 18-9, to hold a 46-37 lead heading into the locker room.
- Similar to the first twenty minutes of play, the Dons stayed within striking distance as the second half started, but it wasn't until the final eight minutes of the contest when USF would come within one possession. Following a three-pointer from Shabazz at 7:33, the green and gold trailed by just three, 65-62.
- After UNLV pushed their lead to nine, 73-64, with 3:07 remaining, USF dug deep on both ends of the ball. Finding the necessary stops needed on defense in addition to attacking on offense, the Dons went on to outscore the Runnin' Rebels, 11-0, down the stretch.
- With 6.8 seconds left on the game clock, Tyrell Roberts pulled up from the wing and sank a contested three-pointer off of an assist from Shabazz to give USF their first lead, 75-73, since 6:16 in the first half. Securing one final stop of UNLV defensively, the Dons gutted out a gritty 75-73 victory to hand the Runnin' Rebels their first loss of the season. Notably, the win also marked USF's first victory at UNLV since a 78-69 win on Jan. 8, 1972.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Dominating for 30 minutes on the hardwood, Zane Meeks was tabbed Player of the Game after logging his fourth double-double of the season with 17 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. Additionally, the forward added two assists and one steal for the Dons on Saturday.
- Alongside Meeks, Shabazz and Roberts each finished with 17 points apiece while also combining for six total assists.
- Enjoying success in his time on the court, Saba Gigiberia reached double figures for the first time as a Don as he finished with 11 points on 4-of-5 from the floor and a perfect 3-of-3 from the free-throw line. Notably, he also pulled down three offensive rebounds and added one steal in 10 minutes played.
- Shifting the starting lineup for the third straight game, Coach Gerlufsen gave Isaiah Hawthorne and Marcus Williams their first career starts in the green and gold against UNLV.
- As a team, USF led the Runnin' Rebels in points off turnovers (19-17) and second chance points (15-11).
