Dons Take Down Lions for Third Straight Win

LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Leading early and controlling the game throughout proved to be a winning formula for the USF Dons women's basketball team (16-13, 10-7) as they went on the road to Southern California and took down the Loyola Marymount Lions 74-67 on Thursday evening.

Ioanna Krimili once again had a phenomenal offensive performance to lead her team, and Jasmine Gayles once again provided a great scoring punch of the bench for the victorious Dons. The win secured a four-game series sweep against both LA based WCC opponents as well as a current three-game winning streak heading into the season's final regular season game.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • The Dons got off to a fast start offensively shooting 60% from the field and forcing four LMU turnovers that led to a 22-16 USF lead through the first 10 minutes of play.
  • LMU responded with a burst in the second quarter to cut into USF's lead, but the Dons regrouped at the end of the half to head into the locker room up 41-37.
  • Both teams returned to the floor for the second half with each offense struggling to put points on the board, the Dons made a few key baskets to keep their lead and head into the fourth quarter up 55-50.
  • Loyola Marymount came out swinging to begin the final quarter as they cut the USF lead down to two before the Dons regained their footing and knocked down late free throws to leave LA with the 74-67 win at Gersten Pavilion.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Krimili netted her third 30-point game of the season as she knocked down 10-of-10 free throws and played the entire 40 minutes in the victory.
  • Gayles was once again a big contributor off the bench scoring 19 points on 8-of-14 from the field to go along with three rebounds and a steal for the Dons.
  • Kennedy Dickie led everyone on the floor as she was +15 in Thursday night's win as she scored 11 points, secured five rebounds and came up with two steals against LMU.
  • Desptie a low scoring night, Jessica McDowell-White dished out eight assists and grabbed six rebounds while also forcing two steals as she did all of the little things in route to the victory.
CATCHING UP WITH COACH GOODENBOUR:
"I'm really proud of this team's toughness, they found a way to win on the road when we needed to and despite not having our full roster available. We want to finish the conference season strong and then regroup and prepare for the WCC tournament. Io stepped up and carried us again offensively, she's been fantastic and it's great to see her play well. Kia Vaalavirta gave us good minutes defensively and had some tough rebounds. This has been a rigorous season and I'm proud of how we have stepped up and met the challenges head on."

UP NEXT:
The Dons now return home for the regular season finale as they will host the Saint Mary's Gaels (14-14, 8-9) Saturday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. for Senior Day. Fans please arrive early for the pregame ceremony as we honor our players who have given this program their all.
