Men's Tennis Comes Up Short Against Santa Clara

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Playing for the final time in the City for the 2022 spring season, the USF Dons men's tennis team (11-10, 3-4) couldn't muster a comeback as they dropped their match against the Santa Clara Broncos 4-1 on Wednesday afternoon at the California Tennis Club.

Due to forecasted weather in the area, both teams agreed to play only singles instead of beginning with doubles as is custom. Wednesday's matches also served as the program's official Senior Day as the Dons graduating class of Phuc Huynh, Mitch Johnson, Nitzan Ricklis and Davey Woodland each played their final matches for USF in San Francisco.

Stevie Gould won his singles match to account for the lone USF point during Wednesday afternoon's matches.

RESULTS:
Singles:
(SCU) Dalmasso def. (USF) Phuc Huynh (6-4, 3-6, 7-5)
(SCU) Neuhaus def. (USF) Nil Giraldez (7-6, (7-5), 6-4)
(SCU) Shah def. (USF) Nitzan Ricklis (7-6, (7-5), 6-4)
(USF) Stevie Gould def. (SCU) Bell (6-1, 7-5)
(SCU) Hinojosa def. (USF) Mitch Johnson (6-4, 6-3)
(USF) David Woodland vs. (SCU) Cmager (6-3, 4-6, 5-2, DNF)

CATCHING UP WITH COACH SUNDLING:
"Congratulations to Santa Clara, they showed up ready to compete and were better than us today. Our guys need to hold themselves accountable for staying locked in with high energy for the duration of a match. If we are unable to do that then we have no shot at winning either of our two remaining matches. Collectively we took to many points and games off today. We look forward to being better this weekend versus Pepperdine and LMU."

UP NEXT:
USF will now travel to Southern California to wrap up their regular season schedule with a pair of matches against both L.A. WCC schools. The Dons will begin their trip in Malibu as they will face the Pepperdine Waves at 2:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon.
