Dons Tennis Opens 2022-23 Season at the Battle in the Bay

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- It's tournament week in the City by the Bay, as the USF Dons men's and women's tennis programs are set to kickoff their 2022-23 seasons by hosting the Battle in the Bay Classic starting Thursday from the California Tennis Club.

Both Dons programs are excited to carry the momentum from last season, as both teams were able to reach the postseason at the WCC Championships in Ojai for the first time in five years for the women and six seasons for the men.

This weekend's event will feature many of the top teams and individuals from across the nation with 20 teams slated to compete at one of the premier tennis venues in the Bay Area. Looking ahead to the 13th annual Battle in the Bay, competition will begin

USF's women's tennis returns all but one student-athlete from last season's team that posted a 12-11 overall record and defeated BYU in the WCC Championships first round to reach the semifinals. Leading the way for the Dons is graduate student Rita Colyer and junior Maria Martinez Vaquero who each were selected as All-WCC Second Team Doubles recipients, with Martinez Vaquero picked for the Second Team in singles as well.

Sophomore Hana Gamracy also stepped up big for the team at the WCC Championships, which included her being chosen to the All-WCC Tournament Team after he decisive individual win that helped the Dons knock off the Cougars 4-3 to advance.

On the men's side the Dons have a few roster changes heading into the new season with a couple of young and talented underclassmen joining the squad. Headlined by the freshman class of Luka Kalenic and transfer student Moritz Hoffmann, the Dons also boast a pair of key returners in Nil Giraldez and Stevie Gould who will hold important positions returning to lead USF's team.

The Dons men's team completed the 2021-22 season with a 11-13 overall record and battled hard before falling short to third seeded Portland in the WCC Championships by a 4-1 final score.
