SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Cruising to their second straight win at home to open the season, the University of San Francisco men's basketball team (2-0) raced past Saint Francis (0-2) on Thursday night as the Dons routed the Red Flash, 84-52, at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
Â
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Trading baskets to open play, a fast break dunk by Marcus Williams and a three-pointer from Ndewedo Newbury marked the first two baskets of the night for the Dons, but Saint Francis matched the green and gold to start as the game was knotted at five three minutes in at the 17:00 mark.
- After free throws at 15:59 put the Red Flash up 10-8, USF answered with a 9-3 run to take a 17-13 lead at 13:14, which was capped off by a step back jumper by Ryan Beasley.
- In the minutes to follow, Saint Francis nailed a three of their own to come within one point, 17-16, but the green and gold responded quickly once again. Using an 11-3 run as the midway point of the first half passed, a turnaround jumper from Mike Sharavjamts kept the Dons in front, 28-19, at 8:24.
- Throughout the rest of the half, San Francisco went on to outscore the Red Flash 13-8 as a dunk from Sharavjamts with 13 seconds left gave USF a double-digit advantage at the break, 41-27.
- Keeping their foot on the gas out of the locker room, the Dons scored the first four baskets of the second half to extend the gap to 23 (50-27) at the 17:04 mark.
- Unloading with a triple of his own, Malik Thomas pushed the USF lead to 30 at 9:52 to make it 63-35 in favor of the green and gold.
- Experiencing little resistance down the stretch, a layup from Thomas at 4:51 gave San Francisco their largest lead of the night (35), 79-44.
- Cruising to the finish line, the Dons never let up on their home floor as USF went on to secure their second straight victory to open the season, 84-52. Â
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Dominating on both ends of the floor, Jonathan Mogbo was tabbed Player of the Game for the second straight contest after finishing with a game-high 16 points and 8 rebounds to go along with four assists, two blocks and one steal in 24 minutes played.
- Sharing the wealth once again, four other Dons alongside Mogbo finished in double figures: Marcus Williams (14 points), Thomas (11 points), Isaiah Hawthorne (11 points) and Stefan Todorovic (11 points).
- Overall, San Francisco outrebounded Saint Francis 33-13 for a +20 margin on the glass in addition to holding the Red Flash to 38.3 percent (18-47) from the floor and 29.4 percent (5-17) from beyond-the-arc.
