SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Squaring off against another familiar foe, the University of San Francisco men's basketball team (15-11, 4-7 WCC) fell to Santa Clara (17-8, 5-5 WCC), 84-70, on Saturday night at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
Â
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Despite missing their first two shots of the contest, the Dons knocked down three straight shots less than three minutes into the game to take an early 7-4 lead at the 17:38.
- In the minutes to follow, Santa Clara responded with a 17-6 run to take control and widen their advantage to eight, 21-13, at the 12:22 mark.
- Answering right back, the Dons rallied with three straight triples to cut their deficit to four, 26-22, as the midway point of the first half approached.
- Continuing to apply pressure as the action played on, SCU held a double-digit lead with 1:10 left in the half, but three points from USF to close things helped the green and gold inch closer heading into the locker room as the Dons trailed 39-32 after the first twenty minutes.
- Out of the break, the Broncos kept at it as they netted six of the first seven points to begin the second half and push their lead back to double digits, 44-33, at 18:52.
- Following a dunk from Zane Meeks just 35 seconds later, USF was back within nine, 44-35, at the 18:17 mark, but this was as close as the Dons would get for the remainder of the night.
- Never letting up, Santa Clara went on to lead by as many as eighteen down the stretch as the Broncos ultimately hung on to secure their fifth conference win of the year by a final of 84-70.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Leaving it all out on the hardwood, Shabazz finished with a game-high 29 points, which also marked a new season-high and his fourth 30+ point performance on the Hilltop. Overall, the sharpshooting guard knocked down 6-of-13 from beyond-the-arc and 9-of-11 from the free throw line while also adding eight rebounds, three steals and one block.
- Alongside Shabazz, Tyrell Roberts (17 points) and Isaiah Hawthorne (10 points) also finished in double figures for USF.
- As a team, the Dons led the Broncos points off turnovers (16-9) and turnovers forced (15-9).Â
