Men's Basketball Signs Versatile Forward Junjie "Barry" Wang

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Head coach Chris Gerlufsen and the University of San Francisco men's basketball program officially announced the addition of Junjie "Barry" Wang on Friday afternoon.

"I am excited to announce the signing of Barry Wang here at the University of San Francisco," said Gerlufsen. "Barry possesses great size and a skillset that gives him a chance to be an instant fan favorite here on the Hilltop. His work ethic, personality and high basketball IQ will make him a huge asset both on and off the court. My staff and I are thrilled that Barry has decided to join us here at USF. We can't wait to get him to campus and get to work!"

Previously enrolled in the NBA's Global Academy, Wang is a versatile 6'9" forward who hails from China. NBA Global Academy is an elite basketball training center at Basketball Australia's Centre of Excellence at the Australian Institute of Sport in Canberra.

During his time at the academy, Wang trained under NBA Global Academy Technical Director Marty Clarke and alongside top international prospects from all around the world, including Australia, Romania, Japan, New Zealand, and South Sudan, among other countries.

In July 2022, he traveled to Atlanta with NBA Global Academy to participate in the fourth NBA Academy Games. The NBA Academy Games is a series of exhibition games featuring top prospects from outside the U.S., including from the league's four academies located in Australia, India, Mexico and Senegal, competing against each other and elite select teams in front of NCAA coaches and NBA scouts. In August 2022, Wang participated in Basketball Without Borders (BWB) Asia 2022, a basketball development camp and showcase for the top high school-age prospects from across Asia. He was named an All-Star of the camp. In December 2022, he traveled with NBA Global Academy to Las Vegas to participate in the Tarkanian Classic followed by an exhibition game at G League Winter Showcase. In February 2023, he participated in Basketball Without Borders Global 2023 in Salt Lake City as part of NBA All-Star 2023. BWB Global camp is held annually at NBA All-Star for the top prospects from the previous summer's camps. Wang was named an MVP of this camp.

Overall, more than 100 NBA Academy participants have committed to or gone on to attend NCAA Division I schools, and 18 NBA Academy participants are playing or have signed to play professionally, including NBA Global Academy graduates Josh Giddey (Oklahoma City Thunder) and Dyson Daniels (New Orleans Pelicans). Notably, Wang will become the first male Chinese NBA Academy alumni to sign with a Division I school.

Impressively, Wang also has experience competing for the Chinese U15 national team as he averaged 18.7 points per game while with the team.

Among other schools, Wang chose San Francisco over the likes of Georgetown, Oklahoma and Providence.
