SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- Entering the postseason ranked sixth in the West Coast Conference, the University of San Francisco Dons women's tennis team (12-9, 4-5) will head down South to compete in the WCC Championships as the sixth seed. Starting off with the same opponent they ended their regular season against, the Dons will begin the tournament facing the third seed LMU Lions (13-6, 7-2) on Thursday April 27, at 10:00 a.m. at the Aztec Tennis Center.
During this 2022-2023 season, the Dons ended with a winning record of 12-9 and were dominant on their home courts collecting five wins and only a pair of losses. In the middle of the season, USF went on a seven match winning streak from March 16 until April1, before heading into conference play to close out the season. Out of their nine losses, the Dons were only shut out twice as they managed to get at least a point on the board in the majority of their team matches.
A power duo on the court this season,
Maria Martinez Vaquero and
Simran Chhabra ended with a winning recorf of 8-5 overall in doubles and garnered a ranking of 87th according to ITA. Individually, three Dons clinched winning records in singles.
Chiho Mushika led the group with a solid 13-7 record, followed by
Arianna Capogrosso who went 10-8, and finally,
Maria Martinez Vaquero closed out the group with a 10-9 ratio and a national ranking of #99.
Last year, the Dons earned the fifth seed and began the WCC Championships by facing number four seed BYU in a tight battle that ended 4-3 in the Dons favor. Their season ended after being knocked out by No. 1 seed Pepperdine Waves in the semifinals. The Dons head to San Diego this week with only one guaranteed match as they prepare to climb up in the championship bracket once again.
