San Francisco Opens Conference Play in San Diego

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – Opening West Coast Conference play on Friday night, the University of San Francisco men's soccer team (5-1-3) heads south for a Friday night matchup at San Diego to begin their 2023 conference slate.

DONS AT A GLANCE:
  • Closing out nonconference play in their last time on the pitch, the Dons fought back to force a 2-2 draw on the road at Air Force this past Saturday, Sept. 23. Right before the halftime break, Chris Maldonado set up Gabriel Bracken Serra for a goal in the 42nd minute, which cut the Falcons' lead in half going into the break. In the 55th minute, Maldonado then netted his first career goal to tie the game at two goals apiece. Continuing their dominant attacks offensively, San Francisco outshot Air Force 24-6 overall as the green and gold have outshot their opponent in all nine matches so far this fall.
  • Heading into WCC action, Bracken Serra remains at the top of the conference in scoring as the midfielder is tied for second in the WCC with five goals on the year. Additionally, Olivier Sylvain has also been danfgerous with the ball as he is currently tied for fourth in the conference in total shots (23) heading into Friday.
  • In goal, Eric Waltz has continued to dominate this season, as he currently leads the conference in goals against average with a .706 mark, good for 22nd best in the nation.
  • As a team, San Francisco currently ranks fifth in the nation in shots per game as the Dons average 17.78 attempts each match through nine games.
SCOUTING THE TOREROS:
  • In their last time out, San Diego fell on the road at Cal State Fullerton, 2-0, on Sunday, Sept. 24 to close out nonconference play. Similar to San Francisco, trhe Toreros also faced off against UC Riverside in the first few weeks of he season as USD and UCR finished in a 0-0 tie on Friday, Sept. 8.
  • Looking back to last season, San Diego is hungry to repeat their success from 2022 as the Toreros finished a perfect 7-0 in conference play to be crowned WCC champions.
  • Midfielder Mason Tunbridge has been delivering for the Toreros this season as the All-WCC Preseason honoree leads his club in total shots (26) and points (10). Additionally, forward Samy Kanaan has scored two game-winning goals for San Diego this season, which is tied for second in the conference.
SERIES HISTORY:
  • Since 2005, San Francisco trails in the head-to-head series against San Diego 10-13-1. Last season, the Toreros took down the Dons, 1-0, in the final game of he regular season on Nov. 12, 2022. Notably, San Francisco last won on the road at San Diego in a 1-0 victory on Nov. 3, 2017.
