Akima Named WCC Defensive Player of the Week for Second Time

SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – For the second time this season, Jolei Akima has been named Credit Union 1 West Coast Conference Defensive Player of the Week, announced by the league Monday afternoon.

Akima led San Francisco defensively in two matches last week, as the team closed the regular season with road wins over Washington State and Gonzaga. Akima shined in her final collegiate contests, posting a team-best 51 digs across two five-set victories. On serve receive, Akima shined as she recorded a .936 reception percentage, handling 47 of the 50 serves she faced across the two matches.

In the win over the Cougars on Wednesday, Nov. 27, Akima posted 20 digs, reaching the 20-dig threshold in a match for the sixth time this season. She followed with a 31-dig performance against the Bulldogs on Saturday, Nov. 30, three shy of matching her career-best of 34 set against Pacific earlier this season.

Completing a career season for the green and gold, Akima concluded 2024 with a team-high 479 digs, ranking her second in the WCC. Earning the start in all 30 matches as a libero, she averaged 3.96 digs per set, fourth best in the conference and second highest of her career.
