SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The West Coast Conference officially announced their end of season awards for the 2023-24 men's basketball season on Tuesday morning.
Â
For San Francisco,
Jonathan Mogbo was named the WCC Newcomer of the Year while
Ryan Beasley was tabbed WCC Freshman of the Year. Mogbo and
Marcus Williams earned All-WCC First Team honors, marking the third straight season in which San Francisco has had two representatives on the All-Conference First Team. Additionally,
Ndewedo Newbury and
Malik Thomas were named Honorable Mentions. Beasley was also named to the All-WCC Freshman Team.
"Our program is thrilled to have five players earn All-WCC honors this year," said head coach
Chris Gerlufsen. "To have so many recognized with awards is a testament to all of their hard work and to the collective success of our team. I am proud of Jonathan, Ryan, Marcus, Ndewedo and Malik - their growth is exciting for both our present and future!"
Â
Evolving into one of the most dominant big men in the country, Mogbo made his mark in year one on the Hilltop. Playing and starting in all 31 games for San Francisco while averaging 28.7 minutes per game, the dynamic forward led the Dons in scoring (14.7 ppg), rebounding (10.3) and steals (1.7 spg). Notably, he finished in the top 20 in Division I in total rebounds (318/7th), field goal percentage (64.33, 8th), double doubles (16, 10th), rebounding (10.3, 13th) and offensive rebounds (3.55/19th). Overall, Mogbo tallied double figures in 26 of USF's 31 games and had ten or more rebounds in 18 of USF's 31 games. For these efforts, he was named WCC Player of the Week three times this season (Jan. 8, Jan. 15 + Feb. 5). Additionally, he was also named to the Lou Henson Award Mid-Season Watch List on Jan. 10.
Â
Immediately making an impact upon his arrival, Beasley has already earned the respect of his fellow coaches and peers in just one season in the green and gold. Playing in 28 total games for the Dons, the San Ramon native averaged 8.1 points, 2.4 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.3 steals in 22.5 minutes for USF this season. Notably, he scored in double figures eleven times, including a career-high 20 points against Purdue Fort Wayne on Nov. 22, 2023. Overall, he was named WCC Freshman of the Week three times (Nov. 27, Feb. 26 + Mar. 4), including the last two weeks to close out the regular season.
Â
For Williams, the guard was key in orchestrating the offense for San Francisco all year. Playing and starting in all 31 games for the Dons while averaging 30.5 minutes per game, he finished first on the team in assists per game (3.8 apg) while also finishing second in scoring (13.9 ppg). Additionally, the second year Don also averaged 3.4 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. Notably, Williams reached double figures in 24 of USF's 31 games including a season-high 28 points against New Orleans on Dec. 11, 2023. Most impressively, he recorded a double-double with 19 points and 10 assists in a win against San Diego on Feb. 1, 2024. Within the WCC, Williams ranked fifth in assists, sixth in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.7) and field goal percentage (45.3), eleventh in scoring, tied for twelfth in three-point field goals per game (1.8) and fourteenth in minutes.
Â
Coming to the Hilltop after two years at Southern California, Thomas continued to blossom with each opportunity throughout the season. Making his first collegiate start on Dec. 20 against Northern Arizona, the guard finished third on the team in scoring (11.5 ppg) while averaging 22.3 minutes per game. Known for his ability to attack the rim, the Fontana native finished in double figures 19 times this season as he ended up making 18 starts for the green and gold. Notably, Thomas finished first overall in the conference in free throw percentage at 87.2 percent (75-86).
Â
Making his presence known on both sides of the ball, Newbury shined for the Dons all season as he also excelled as the year went along. Often tasked with guarding one of the opponent's top players, the third year forward finished with averages of 9.2 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. Defensively, he was a force to be reckoned with as he finished third in the WCC in blocked shots (34/1.1 bpg).
