SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. –
Joe Soberon pitched seven stellar innings as the University of San Francisco baseball team (17-19, 1-8 WCC) narrowly fell to Gonzaga (14-18, 10-2 WCC) 3-0 in the series finale Sunday afternoon at Benedetti Diamond.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Gonzaga grabbed the early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jace Phelan poked a two-out bases-loaded single to left field, scoring Donovan Ratfield. During the play, a pin-point throw from Logan Azem in left field cut down Tommy Eisenstat at the plate to prevent a second run from scoring.
- Soberon, earning his team-leading ninth start of the season, settled down and followed with six scoreless innings for the Dons, allowing just five baserunners.
- The Bulldogs added to their lead in the final frame, plating two runs to extend the advantage to 3-0.
- The Dons battled in the bottom half of the ninth inning as Myles Kallinger singled to left field and advantage to second on a balk. The game, however, ended shortly after on an Azem line out to second base.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Soberon pitched a near-perfect game for the Dons, going seven solid innings while allowing just one run on five hits. Posting five strikeouts throughout his outing, Soberon helped strand six Gonzaga baserunners, lowering his season earned-run average to 3.58.
- TJ Rogers went two-for-three at the plate with two doubles and a walk while Matty Fung, Michael Campagna, and Kallinger also recorded base hits.
