SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Following an eleven-year career leading the University of San Francisco women's soccer program,
Jim Millinder, the team's longest-tenured head coach, has announced his retirement.
"We are most certainly pleased that Jim can now bask in the satisfaction of an amazing career while pursuing retirement hobbies and spending more time with his family," Director of Athletics Larry Williams said. "Aside from the impressive competitive success that Jim's teams achieved, his most extraordinary talent lies in his ability to connect with, support, and mentor young people."
During his tenure on the Hilltop, Millinder compiled 87 wins, the second-most victories in program history only to Jean Paul Verhees. In his 11 seasons leading the green and gold, Millinder guided the program to three double-digit winning seasons in 2015, 2018, and 2019 while finishing in the top half of the West Coast Conference multiple times. Under his tutelage, 13 players earned WCC All-Conference recognition, 14 garnered WCC All-Academic selections, and Ali Schaffer was named WCC Co-Defender of the Year in 2015.
"It has been a wonderful experience during my time on the Hilltop," Millinder said. "I would like to thank the administration for supporting women's soccer, my coaching staff for their dedication through the years, and most importantly, the players for their commitment and dedication to our program. I look forward to the next chapter of my life."
In just his third season, Millinder guided the program to its most successful campaign, as the Dons accumulated a 13-4-3 overall record in 2015. Setting the bar as the best-ever season in program history and the first winning season since 2004, the historic run was highlighted by two nationally ranked wins over No. 5 BYU and No. 19 Santa Clara, a second-place finish in the West Coast Conference standings, and Millinder being named National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) West Region Coach of the Year.
In his final season with the Dons in 2023, Millinder guided the team to a 6-9-3 overall record, including two impressive wins over nationally ranked Santa Clara. In the first meeting, the Dons dominated the Broncos, earning a 3-0 victory on September 21 at Negoesco Stadium, and later completed the program's first-ever season sweep of the Broncos with a 1-0 road win on October 18. The two wins over Santa Clara marked the first time the Dons shut out the Broncos twice in a single season in program history.
Before his time with the Dons, Millinder served as the head women's soccer coach at Southern California from 1996 through the 2006 season. Leading USC to eight NCAA Tournament appearances, Millinder posted a 136-70-21 record during his 11 seasons with the Women of Troy while securing a Pac-10 title in 1998.
Prior to taking over at USC, Millinder spent two seasons at LMU, leading the Lions to three wins against nationally ranked programs, including a victory over No. 8 Santa Clara in 1994.
Overall, in 24 seasons at the Division I level, Millinder compiled a 231-185-54 overall record as a head coach, winning 54.9 percent of games played.
