SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Despite a well-rounded performance, the University of San Francisco volleyball team (3-16, 1-8) dropped a 3-2 West Coast Conference decision to Gonzaga (11-9, 4-5) Saturday afternoon at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- San Francisco fell behind early in the opening frame and lost a highly competitive first set 25-17. The green and gold trailed by as many as eight points as Gonzaga gained an early 9-3 lead and cruised to the set victory.
- The Dons responded in the second set, tying the match at a set apiece. Trailing early, 13-9, the program used a 10-5 scoring run to take its first lead of the set at 19-18. The defense impressed throughout the run, as San Francisco forced Gonzaga into seven attack errors.
- Going back-and-forth late in the frame, back-to-back kills from Andrea Fabikovicová and Crystal Galaviz pushed the Dons over the finish line for a 26-24 second-set win.
- Holding the momentum in the third set, the green and gold jumped out to a commanding 20-15 lead following a 5-1 scoring run. Shannon Knight, Maeve Bailey, and Galaviz highlighted the run with a combined three kills.
- Despite a late push from the Bulldogs, Galaviz ended the set with a kill to give the Dons a 25-20 victory.
- The Bulldogs forced a deciding final frame with a narrow 27-25 fourth-set victory and came back from an 11-7 deficit in the fifth to win the set and match, 17-15.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Galaviz led San Francisco offensively with a career-best 19 kills while swinging at a .269 clip.
- Emilija Arsic added a career-high 16 kills while reaching double-digit kills for the second time this season. Astrid Puig also posted double-digit kills with 12.
- Abby Wadas, Fabikovicová, and Jamie Low led the backline throughout the contest, totaling 20, 15, and 12 digs, respectively.
- As a team, the Dons recorded a .236 hitting percentage, the fourth straight match hitting at .230 or better.
