Comeback Falls Short, Beavers Top Dons on Saturday Afternoon

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The University of San Francisco volleyball team (2-12, 0-4 WCC) found momentum in the back half of the match on Saturday afternoon, but the Dons could not complete a comeback at home on the Hilltop as Oregon State (10-4, 4-0 WCC) picked up a 3-1 victory.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • San Francisco found themselves in an early hole, dropping a tough first set 25-18. The Dons trailed by as many as seven points as Oregon State grabbed the advantage for good at 12-11 in a set that was tied up five times before the Beavers took control.
  • USF lost the second set 25-14, digging a 2-0 hole in the match. San Francisco trailed by as many as 11 points as Oregon State grabbed the advantage for good at 3-2 in a set that was tied up two times before the Beavers took over the lead.
  • The Dons rallied back in the third set to pull within one, 2-1. USF trailed by 11 points at 13-2 before rallying to win 25-22. San Francisco jumped in front at 22-21 and hung on for a set win, totaling 16 kills in the set. The USF offense also got a boost from three aces in the set. San Francisco's front row had a solid defensive performance, blocking four Oregon State attacks in the set.
  • San Francisco couldn't continue the momentum and lost in the fourth set, 25-23, to drop the match. The Dons dropped the set despite a strong performance on the attacking end, registering a .341 attack percentage with 18 kills in the set loss.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Maeve Bailey was efficient on the attack, accumulating 12 kills against the Beavers while hitting .667.
  • Astrid Puig tallied a team-high 16 kills for USF.
  • Crystal Galaviz had a team-high nine digs on Saturday.
  • San Francisco attackers were helped by a match-high 29 assists from Andrea Fabikovicová.

San Francisco will begin a stretch of four straight matches on the road as the Dons will make the trip to the South Bay to battle Santa Clara on Thursday, Oct. 6 at 6:00 pm.
