SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Head coach
Chris Gerlufsen and the University of San Francisco men's basketball program announced the return of Vinnie McGhee as assistant coach on Wednesday afternoon.
"I am thrilled to welcome Bay Area native Vinnie McGhee back onto our coaching staff for the 2025-26 season," said Gerlufsen. "Coach McGhee is a favorite amongst our players and staff, and his return elevates our entire program. He is elite with player development and has a keen understanding of what we do. I know Vinnie is anxious and excited to share his experience at the NBA level over the past two seasons with our team."
Â
Most recently, McGhee spent the past two years in the NBA G League, first with the South Bay Lakers (Los Angeles Lakers) and then with the Wisconsin Herd (Milwaukee Bucks), where he continued to develop a reputation as a standout teacher and mentor for guards and perimeter players.
Â
McGhee previously spent five years with the Dons from 2019-23, helping guide USF to three 20+ win campaigns, including a 24-win season and an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament in 2021-2022. This appearance marked San Francisco's return to March Madness for the first time since 1997-1998. Before his first tenure on the Hilltop, McGhee coached at Northern Colorado, where he helped lead the Bears to consecutive 20-win seasons and the 2017-18 CIT Championship. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant under Tim Floyd at UTEP in 2015-16.
Â
"I am excited to be back home at USF!" said McGhee. "I always stayed connected with the staff and players during my two seasons away. This program is family to me, and I cannot wait to get back to work in War Memorial with the guys!"
Â
As a student-athlete, McGhee scored over 1,000 career points at Sacramento State and CSUN. He was named Big Sky Freshman of the Year and an All-Conference Honorable Mention in 2008-09. At CSUN, McGhee finished his career ranked third in three-point field goals made, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Pan African-American Studies. Following his collegiate career, he played professionally with the San Francisco Rumble of the ABA, where he averaged 22.7 points per game.
Â
A proud Oakland native, McGhee starred at McClymonds High School, where he was a two-time First Team All-Oakland Athletic League selection and helped lead the Warriors to a 28-4 overall record, a league title, and the Northern California Division I championship his senior year.
