DONS AT A GLANCE:
- In its first road contest of the season, San Francisco nearly came back from 23 down in the second half at Memphis on Saturday, Nov. 8, but ultimately fell to the Tigers, 76-70, at FedExForum. The Dons found themselves in a 48-25 hole with 17 minutes to play in regulation, but gritted their way back to make it a four-point game, 66-62, with just under three minutes remaining. Despite the loss, Mookie Cook eclipsed his career-high for a second straight game, scoring a game-high 18 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field and 3-of-4 shooting from three in 32 minutes off the bench, all career-bests for the transfer from Oregon. Tyrone Riley IV and David Fuchs rounded out the double-figure scorers for San Francisco, scoring 15 and 12 points, respectively.
- Chris Gerlufsen and the Dons will enjoy a three-game homestand in a building that they are 32-2 in since the start of the 2023-24 campaign. Notably, San Francisco has won 19 straight regular-season home games at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center, with three chances to extend the streak coming in the next week for the green and gold.
- In his three-plus seasons as head coach on the Hilltop, Gerlufsen is 20-10 following a loss. However, he was 8-1 following a defeat last season, with a chance to pick up his first victory after a loss on Wednesday.
- After hosting Portland State on Wednesday night, the Dons will welcome Bradley to the Hilltop on Saturday night, and will close out the homestand against Northwestern State on Tuesday, Nov. 18. USF fell narrowly on the road at Bradley last season, dropping a 66-64 contest in Peoria, Ill., on Dec. 18, 2024.
- Portland State (PSU) also brings a 1-1 record to the Hilltop, picking up its first win of the season on Friday, Nov. 7, against Northwest Indian, 122-74. The Vikings dropped their season opener at Stanford, 89-79, last Tuesday, Nov. 4. In the loss against the Cardinal, the Vikings found themselves down just five points with 12 minutes to play in the second half, but were unable to pull off the upset. PSU fired back on Friday night to capture its first win of the season with a wire-to-wire 48-point victory against Northwest Indian, extending its home win streak to 12 games.
- Four Vikings are averaging double-figure scoring to start the campaign, led by senior guard Jaylin Henderson, scoring 19.5 points in the first two games of the season, shooting 50.0 percent from the field in 28.5 minutes per contest.
- After finishing 19-13 last year, including an 11-7 record in Big Sky action, Portland State was picked to finish second in both the Big Sky Preseason Coaches' Poll (3 of 10 first-place votes) and Media Poll (9 of 35 first-place votes). Fifth-year head coach Jase Coburn looks to lead the Vikings to their first postseason berth since 2018.
- Along with Henderson, senior returnees Terri Miller Jr. and Tre-Vaughn Minott were all named to the Big Sky's Preseason All-Conference Team. Miller Jr. scored 14 points with three made treys in the season opener against Stanford, while Minott is shooting 63.6 percent from the field through the Vikings' first two games of the season.
- San Francisco and Portland State will meet for just the third time in program history, with each team having secured a win in the previous two matchups. The Dons and Vikings will meet for the first time in nearly a decade, having last squared off on Dec. 16, 2016, when Portland State narrowly defeated USF, 82-78, on the Hilltop. Notably, current USF assistant coach and director of player development Frankie Ferrari logged two assists and three rebounds in nine minutes of play in that most recent matchup with the Vikings in 2016.
- USF took the first-ever meeting on Dec. 18, 2014, routing Portland State, 77-40, in San Francisco.
