SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Sina Toroslu totaled 11 kills with a .647 hitting percentage to help lead the University of San Francisco volleyball team (4-20, 2-12) to a five-set victory over Saint Mary's (8-16, 6-7) Thursday evening at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- San Francisco fell into an early hole after the first set, dropping the opening frame 25-17. Saint Mary's opened on an 11-4 advantage and led by as many as 12 points during the set.
- Leveling the match at a set apiece, the Dons jumped out to a five-point advantage, 10-5, in the second set following a 6-1 scoring run. Emilija Arsic led the charge with two kills, while Crystal Galaviz and Shannon Knight added offensive production to guide the team during the run.
- Despite a late rally from the Gaels at the backend of the second, the Dons recorded four of the final five points to secure the frame, 25-21.
- Saint Mary's regained the lead in a back-and-forth third set, 25-23. The set featured five lead changes and was tied 12 times. Neither team had a lead of more than three points along the way.
- The Dons battled back in the fourth set, leveling the match for the second time. Tied at 10, Astrid Puig kick-started a 5-0 scoring run with a kill to give the green and gold a 15-10 advantage.
- The Gaels later on trimmed their deficit to 23-21, but the Dons concluded the set with two straight points to win 25-21 and send the match to a deciding fifth set.
- San Francisco's defense held in the fifth set, as San Francisco recorded six blocks to lead the program to a 15-13 win to secure the match, 3-2.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Toroslu recorded an impressive 11 kills from the middle blocker position and a season-best .647 hitting percentage.
- Leading the team offensively, Arsic registered a team-high 15 kills while swinging at a .282 clip.
- Cagla Bengi and Madison McPherson thrived at the setter position, accumulating 17 and 14 assists, respectively. McPherson also posted her first double-double, adding a team-high 14 digs.
- As a team defensively, San Francisco totaled a season-best 19 blocks, with Puig and Toroslu recording eight apiece.
