Dons Swept By Cougars to Open Conference Play

PULLMAN, Wash. – Opening West Coast Conference action on the road, the University of San Francisco volleyball team (2-9, 0-1) fell 3-0 at Washington State (7-4, 1-0) Thursday evening at Bohler Gym.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT: 

  • San Francisco fell behind early in the match, dropping the opening frame 25-19. Despite the set loss, the Dons served well, accumulating five aces throughout the frame.
  • Trailing 23-14, Andrea Fabikovicová rallied the program with three service aces while Emilija Arsic added a kill to trim the deficit to 23-18.
  • The Cougars, however, recorded two of the final three points to gain the edge, 25-19.
  • In a back-and-forth affair in the second set, San Francisco jumped out to an early lead, 5-0, highlighted by kills from Arsic and Hannah Taylor.
  • Washington State battled back and gained a late lead at 20-19. The Cougars rolled in the back half of the frame, winning four of the last five points for a 25-22 second-set victory.
  • Tied at six in a tightly-contested third set, the Dons used an 8-2 scoring run to take a commanding 14-8 advantage. Taylor, Arsic, Shannon Knight, and Hokulani Perez guided the green and gold offensively and defensively throughout the run.
  • The Cougars recovered late in the set, jumping ahead and securing the frame and match, 25-22.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:

  • Arsic posted a team-high eight kills while swinging at an impressive .438 clip. She also added value on the defensive side of the ball with three blocks and three digs.
  • Fabikovicová matched a career-best in service aces with four while adding 16 assists.
  • As a team, San Francisco posted seven blocks, highlighted by solo rejections from Arsic, Perez, and Astrid Puig.

UP NEXT:
San Francisco continues its road trip when it travels to take on Gonzaga at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 27, at Charlotte Y. Martin Centre.
