SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – Highlighted by a career performance from Hannah Taylor, the University of San Francisco volleyball team (1-2) outlasted Portland State (1-4) and earned a 3-2 five-set victory for its first win of the season on Friday evening at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- In a hard-fought opening frame that featured six lead changes and was tied 18 times, San Francisco persevered for a 31-29 victory to take an early advantage in the match.
- Late in the frame with Portland State leading 29-28, the green and gold recorded the final three points as a kill from Crystal Galaviz and two Viking attack errors guided the team to the early lead.
- Despite a well-rounded offensive performance, the Dons dropped the second set, 32-30, as the Vikings evened the match at a set apiece. As a team during the second set, the green and gold posted a .302 hitting percentage and 22 kills.
- In a similar fashion to the opening frame, Portland State led late, 30-29, following a back-and-forth affair throughout the set. The Vikings ended the set well, recording two of the final three points to secure the frame, 32-30.
- Leading 11-9 in the third set, San Francisco, aided by kills from Maeve Bailey, Astrid Puig, and a service ace from Abby Wadas, posted five straight points to take a commanding 15-9 advantage.
- Cruising through the back half of the frame, Puig regained the match lead for the green and gold with a kill to earn a 25-19 third-set victory.
- After dropping the fourth set 25-23, the Dons secured the match victory with a 15-12 win in the fifth set.
- San Francisco jumped ahead early, as the defense forced Portland State into two attack errors to conclude an 8-3 scoring run.
- Despite a late run by the Vikings, Taylor ended the match with a kill to give the Dons a 15-12 fifth-set victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Taylor and Puig guided San Francisco offensively, totaling 45 of the team's 74 kills. Taylor posted a career-best 23 kills to lead the program as she swung at a .353 clip and added one block assist.
- Puig added a season-best 22 kills while also tallying three block assists and five digs.
- In just her third-career match, Andrea Fabikovicová recorded 57 kills, the most by a freshman setter since 2020. She also recorded her first-ever double-double, accumulating 14 digs throughout the contest.
- Continuing her double-digit dig total to begin the season, Wadas recorded 19 to lead the team. Her total in the win over the Vikings moved her into the top 10 in the program's all-time digs list, increasing her career total to 1,044.
- As a team, San Francisco recorded season highs in kills (74), assists (64), digs (79), blocks (14), points (94.0), and hitting percentage (.251).
