San Francisco Drops Narrow Three-Set Decision to Long Beach State

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. – The University of San Francisco volleyball team (1-3) dropped the final match of the Battle By The Bay tournament, falling 3-0 to Long Beach State (3-3) on Saturday afternoon at War Memorial at the Sobrato Center.
 
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • In a tightly contested first set, San Francisco led the frame late, 22-20, after utilizing a 6-1 scoring run. Astrid Puig led the charge throughout the run, totaling three kills while the Dons' defense forced the Beach into one attack error.
  • Long Beach State answered, however, and scored five of the final six points to secure the win in the first set, 25-23.
  • The green and gold fell in the second set 25-20, digging a 2-0 hole in the match. The Dons lost the second set despite a solid performance on the attacking side, registering a .345 attack percentage with 12 kills in the set loss.
  • Puig and Hannah Taylor totaled four kills apiece to lead the team in the second set, while Abby Wadas recorded six of the team's nine digs.
  • Long Beach State outpaced San Francisco in the final frame, jumping out to a commanding 13-6 lead. Trailing by as many as nine points at the backend of the third set, the Dons trimmed the deficit to seven, 20-13, following a kill from Crystal Galaviz.
  • The Beach dominated the rest of the way, recording five of the final eight points to secure the set and match, 26-16. 
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Puig had a match-high two aces in the loss and 17 kills, her second straight contest with double-digit kills.
  • Andrea Fabikovicová continued her dominance at the setter position, as she led the team in assists with 32.
  • Defensively, Wadas finished the match with 17 digs, concluding the tournament with 36. 

UP NEXT:
San Francisco returns to the road when it takes on Idaho State in the first match of the Boise State Invitational at 2:30 p.m. PT on Thursday, Sept. 11, at Bronco Gym.
