Broncos Outlast Dons in Midweek Battle

Box Score SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The University of San Francisco (USF) men's basketball team (13-10, 5-5 WCC) came out of the gates firing on Wednesday night, but the Dons fell victim to a second half swoon as Santa Clara (18-5, 9-1 WCC) outlasted USF, 88-73, at Leavey Center.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • San Francisco was first to attack, nabbing an early 11-4 advantage five minutes into the ballgame, with Junjie Wang outscoring Santa Clara by himself with 7 quick points.
  • After three scoreless minutes on both ends, SCU struck back with a 15-6 run, which started and ended with three-pointers by KJ Cochran, taking a 19-17 lead with just under six minutes to play in the first half.
  • Finding their rhythm, the Dons shot 6-of-9 from the field to finish out the period, including three buckets in the paint by Tyrone Riley IV, but the Broncos ultimately took a narrow 34-31 advantage into halftime.
  • Coming out of the break, Santa Clara was quick to inflate its lead, going on a 15-7 spurt in the first five minutes of the second half, forcing Chris Gerlufsen to use a timeout down 49-38 with 14:59 on the clock.
  • After a Sash Gavalyugov three-pointer gave the Broncos their biggest lead of the night, 52-40, the green and gold quickly scored nine unanswered points to bring the deficit to three, 52-49, with 12 minutes remaining in the half.
  • SCU regained control shortly after with a 23-10 run over the next six minutes to take a 75-59 lead with 5:55 to play.
  • Santa Clara's lead was too much for San Francisco to overcome, as the Broncos remained undefeated on their home court, claiming an 88-73 victory.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Setting a new season-high, Guillermo Diaz Graham scored 15 points on 5-of-8 shooting from the field, his highest scoring game as a Don, to go along with a career-high tying five assists.
  • Ryan Beasley continued his streak of scoring in double figures in every conference game this season, totaling 11 points and shooting 2-for-4 from deep.
