LOS ANGELES, Calif. - Ryan Beasley finished with a career-high 32 points on Thursday night, but the University of San Francisco (USF) men's basketball team (11-7, 3-2 WCC) fell to LMU (11-7, 2-3 WCC), 84-82, in double overtime at Gersten Pavilion.
Beasley added six rebounds and three assists to his 32 points to lead the Dons. Legend Smiley helped out with 16 points and two blocks off the bench, and Veniamin Abosi chipped in with seven points and six rebounds.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
- Following an even start out of the gates, San Francisco netted five straight points with 17:43 left in the first half, culminating in a three-pointer from Beasley, to take a 9-4 lead. LMU responded to tie things up at 31-31 heading into halftime. San Francisco got the job done in the paint in the first half, scoring 16 of its 31 points close to the basket.
- The Lions then snagged a 52-42 advantage coming out of the break before San Francisco responded with a 7-0 run to shrink the deficit to 52-49 with 7:49 to go in the contest. The Dons rally continued as they outscored the Lions 18-15 the rest of the way to tie the game at 67-67 and force overtime.
- After an evenly matched first overtime period, LMU then grabbed an 82-77 advantage with 2:49 left in the second overtime, but San Francisco fought back with another 5-0 run to even the score at 82-all with 2:06 to go in the period. The Dons could not turn this momentum into a victory, as the Lions scored the game-winning basket with under ten seconds left to hand San Francisco an 84-82 loss.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
- Beasley set a new career-high in field goals made (11) and minutes played (43) while also tying his season-high with six rebounds. He also added one block and one steal against the Lions.
- Junjie Wang tied his career-high with two blocks against LMU, both of which came in the final 2:30 of regulation. The Dons were active in affecting shots on the defensive end, recording six blocks as a team.
- USF's bench made an impact by adding 28 points to its scoring output, 16 of which came from Smiley.
- San Francisco lost despite a 49-38 rebounding advantage. USFÂ cleaned up on the offensive glass, collecting 16 offensive boards in the game. Guillermo Diaz Graham led the green and gold individually by tying his season-high with nine rebounds.
