DONS AT A GLANCE:
  • San Francisco is hungry to get back in the win column, having most recently dropped a 907-63 contest to Oregon State at home on Thursday night. Despite the loss to the Beavers, four Dons finished in double figures: Ryan Beasley (17 points), Legend Smiley (14 points), Vukasin Masic (11 points), and Junjie Wang (10 points).
  • Within conference play, USF remains in the top five in multiple statistical categories as a team: rebounds per game (36.6, fourth), offensive rebounds per game (11.4, tied for fourth), and three-point field goals made (8.5, fifth).
  • The Dons will aim to dominate on the glass against San Diego once again on Sunday, as San Francisco recorded a 42-28 advantage in total rebounds in their win over the Toreros in January. Notably, the green and gold are 12-4 this year when outrebounding their opponent, and 62-9 under fourth-year head coach Chris Gerlufsen.
  • Sunday's contest will be USF's first chance at a season sweep in conference play this season, with the Dons having previously defeated the Toreros, 74-64, at home on Jan. 2. Looking ahead, the green and gold have a chance to climb the WCC standings in the next week, hosting Gonzaga (Chase Center) on Feb. 18 and Santa Clara (senior night) on Feb. 21 to round out USF's home schedule.
SCOUTING THE TOREROS:
  • Similar to San Francisco, San Diego has dropped four of its last six contests, and is eager to continue its momentum after a 71-58 win at home over Portland in its last time out on Wednesday night. In the victory over the Pilots, Juanse Gorosito did it all as the guard tallied a game-high 19 points to go along with five rebounds, five assists, and three steals on 6-of-12 from the field and 5-of-8 from beyond the arc. Toneari Lane also finished with 14 points on 4-of-6 from the floor and 4-of-5 from distance for the Toreros. Notably, the 58 points given up against the Pilots were the second-lowest total by a USD opponent this season.
  • After Gorosito passed the 1,000-point mark a few weeks back, San Diego now has five student-athletes who have surpassed 1,000 points in their collegiate careers: Lane (1,507), Adrian McIntyre (1,382), Tim Moore (1,341), Dominique Ford (1,176), and Gorosito (1,081). Most recently, Lane surpassed 1,500 career points with his performance in the win over Portland on Wednesday.
  • Ty-Laur Johnson, who had caught fire recently and was San Diego's leading scorer in conference play with 16.7 points per game, is no longer with the program as of Thursday, Feb. 12. Dynamic for USD, Johnson had led the Toreros in multiple categories in WCC action prior to his departure: points per game, steals (31), assists (59), field goals made (73), field goals attempted (158), free throws made (34), and free throws attempted (42).
  • If San Francisco can hold San Diego to under 80 points, the Dons have a good chance at securing a victory on the road, as USD is 5-14 so far this season when scoring under 80 points.
SERIES HISTORY:
  • Sundy's meeting between San Francisco and San Diego will mark the 96th all-time meeting between the two programs, with the Dons holding a 54-41 advantage in the series. USF is 11-1 against USD in its last 12 matchups, dating back to the 2019-20 season, and has won six straight contests over the Toreros, including back-to-back season sweeps (2023-24 and 2024-25). San Francisco has also won five straight games on the road in San Diego. Most recently, the green and gold handled the Toreros, 74-64, at home on the Hilltop on Jan. 2, which included Tyrone Riley IV tying his season-high with 22 points.
