Jon Norfolk enters his third year as an assistant baseball coachat the University of San Francisco. He serves in a variety ofroles; working mainly with the hitters and catchers. He assistswith catcher strength and conditioning program, maintaining fieldduties, coaching first base and tracking academic progress.
Working with the catchers, Norfolk played a major role indeveloping Ryan Lipkin’s game-management skills. Lipkin wasdrafted in the 23rd round of the 2010 Major LeagueAmateur Draft. Under Norfolk’s guidance, Lipkin proved to beone of the country’s most complete catchers. Lipkin was asemi-finalist for the 2010 Johnny Bench Award, given annually tothe nation’s top collegiate catcher.
During the summer of 2010, Norfolk served as head coach atIMG’s world premier high school wooden-bat league inBradenton, Fla. The league aims to improve athletic and gameadvancement through an international forum with players competingfrom all across the world.
Norfolk is no stranger to the Hilltop, as he was a catcher forthe Dons from 2002-07. Most remember Norfolk for smashing thewinning two-run homerun with two outs in the ninth inning of hisfinal game in 2007. The homerun gave USF an 11-10 victory overSaint Mary's. As a Don, Norfolk batted .388 with 111 hits (17doubles, one triple, and four homeruns), 27 RBI, and started 108 of164 games played.
Born and raised in Riverside, CA, Norfolk earned his Bachelor'sDegree in Business Administration from USF in 2007 and his Master'sDegree in Organization and Leadership in 2008. He served as theAssistant Academic Advisor for the Athletic Department during the2007-08 school year.
