The University of San Francisco women's cross country team won its second consecutive West Coast Conference Championship in dominating fashion at the Crystal Springs Cross Country Course in Belmont. USF beat second-place Portland by 33 points and turned in its lowest team score in school history with a combined 38 points.
It was also the second consecutive year the Dons placed four runners in the top 10. USF's scoring runners, two freshmen and three sophomores, all finished in the top 12. The Dons' top four finishers all ran just as fast or faster than the team's top two runners at the 2009 race.
Helen Lehman-Winter was named Women's WCC Cross Country Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season. Freshman Jana Stolting led the Dons across the line in 20:54 for a fourth-place finish. Stolting was the only freshman to finish in the top eight and was named West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year.
Sophomore Eva Krchova placed in the top 10 for the second consecutive season, finishing sixth in 21:08. Sophie Curl, a sophomore, ran the fastest 6k race of her collegiate career by more than 20 seconds to earn a seventh-place finish in 21:25.
Maor Tiyouri was ninth in 21:34 and was just the second freshman to cross the finish line. Rounding out the scoring five for USF was Chloe Treleven in 21:42 for 12th place. Junior Hillary Kigar was 18th in 21:55 and senior Nicole Bowler was 28th in 22:36. Stolting, Krchova, Curl and Tiyouri were named First-Team All-WCC, while Treleven was named honorable mention.
Did You Know? Freshman Jana Stolting earned 2010 Division I All-Academic Cross Country status as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association. Solting is the first-ever cross country athlete at USF to earn this distinction. "This is really exciting," Stolting said. "And it's also surprising because I wasn't even sure what the qualifications were." In order to earn All-Academic status, athletes must compile a 3.25 GPA and earn either All-America status or finish in the top 15 (or top 10 percent) of their NCAA region. Stolting finished her first semester at USF with a 3.8 GPA and was 15th at the NCAA Western Regionals, which was the best individual regionals finish in USF history. She also set a new school record in the 6k with a time of 20:31.41
