Felipe Cabrera Scores First Goal of the Season for the Dons

(San Francisco) – USF men's soccer struggled and San Diego capitalized capturing a 3-1 West Coast Conference victory on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Negoesco Stadium. The Dons (2-6-1, 0-2-0 WCC) could not keep up with the defending league champion Toreros (4-4-1, 1-1-0 WCC) and dropped their third straight match.

San Diego controlled the first half and held a dominating 13-5 shot advantage in the period. The Toreros found the back of the net first in the 35th minute as Marcello Carminatti slammed a feed from Conor McFadden to the far post from 10 yards for lead. Patrick Wallen made it 2-0 USD in the 49th minute winning a breakaway off an assist from Stephen Posa.

USF showed signs of life in the first 20 minutes of the second half and pressed the attack and out-shot San Diego 11-7 after the intermission. Junior forward Felipe Cabrera scored his first goal of the season off assists from senior midfielder Victor Cortez and sophomore midfielder Vinny Caloiaro.

"Today for 90 minutes we were out-played, out-competed, out-hustled and beaten to the ball by a much better USD team," USF head coach Erik Visser said. "We were not well prepared and didn't compete well. As head coach I was very displeased with our overall performance and I take overall responsibility for it. I am challenging the team to find a mentality for the next couple games."

San Francisco would get no closer as Sergio Caranza punched in a failed clearance in the box to make the score 3-1 Toreros.

San Diego finished with a 20-16 shots advantage and held a lead in corner kicks 6-4.

Sophomore goalkeeper Brendan Roslund (1-5-1) suffered the loss for the Dons and made five saves. Adam Campbell (2-0-0) collected the win and made five saves for USD.

USF continues its rough stretch of the schedule and plays its third game in six days Wednesday when it hosts Bay Area rival Saint Mary's in WCC play. Match time against the Gaels is set for 7:00 PM at Negoesco Stadium. Live video streaming will be available on USFDons.com courtesy of Yahoo Broadcast.
