Dons Play Fourth Match in Eight Days Friday Night at
Santa Clara
(San Francisco) – USF men's soccer did everything but
find the back of the net Wednesday night in West Coast Conference
action against Saint Mary's and dropped a heartbreaker 1-0 in
the waning moments of the second overtime period. The Dons (2-7-1,
0-3-0 WCC) had opportunities but could not cash in against the
Gaels (6-3-1, 2-1-0 WCC).
In the 107th minute Ismail Adam made his first goal of the season
memorable firing a rebound into the upper corner for the only tally
of the match. Saint Mary's held a 14-11 shots advantage, 6-2
after the end of regulation. The Gaels fired nine shots on frame
compared to just two for San Francisco.
"The team did everything that we asked them to do," USF
head coach Erik Visser said. "They put everything on the
line. They played extremely hard with a lot of passion. I was very
proud of them. It could have gone either way. Saint Mary's
had a lot of composure and in a decisive moment in overtime they
were more decisive than us when it counted. Overall, I can't
ask more from this team."
Dylan Leslie fired a match-high five shots for Saint Mary's,
while freshman forward Tanner Smith led the Dons with four, two on
frame.
Sophomore USF goalkeeper Brendan Roslund suffered the loss for the
Dons despite posting a season-high eight saves in more than 106
minutes between the pipes. Doug Herrick (6-3-1) collected his sixth
shutout win of the season for the Gaels and made a pair of
saves.
San Francisco returns to action when it plays its fourth match in
eight days at ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara Friday, October 8.
Match time against the Broncos is set for 7:00 PM at Buck Shaw
Stadium.
