(San Diego) – San Francisco allowed its first goal in more than 340 minutes of play and San Diego held on for a 1-0 West Coast Conference victory Friday night at Torero Stadium. The Dons (5-5-2, 3-1-1 WCC) drop their first league match of the season while the Toreros (6-5-1, 3-1-1 WCC) down the Green and Gold for the sixth straight time.
Eli Galbraith-Knapp put San Diego on the board in the 63rd minute off an assist from Stephen Posa. The shot bounced past and eluded the grasp of junior goalkeeper Brendan Roslund (5-4-2). It was just the second goal allowed by USF during WCC play and the first in 341:07.
"On the day, the better team won," USF head coach Erik Visser said. "They beat us to the ball early and we did not show enough of a sense of urgency. I thought we had a better second half. They scored against the run of play, but overall we just did not create enough scoring opportunities to get the result."
Both teams attempted 11 shots in the contest, with USF holding a 7-3 advantage after the intermission. Freshman striker Miguel Aguilar led the way with a match-high three shots for the Dons, while senior defender Kevin Orozco added a pair.
San Francisco had perhaps its best scoring opportunity in the closing seconds when Roslund fired a header on target off a corner kick. Adam Campbell made the save to preserve the shutout for the Toreros.
"Now we have to pull up our sleeves," Visser said. The double-round robin is tough. The kids will bounce back and get ready for a tough match with LMU on Sunday."
San Francisco completes its Southern California WCC road swing when it takes on Loyola Marymount Sunday, October 16. Match time against the Lions is set for 3:00 PM.
