(San Francisco) - Freshman Mackenzie Krieser scored her first career goal as the University of San Francisco women's soccer team dropped a 2-1 double overtime loss to visiting George Washington Sunday at Negoesco Stadium.
With the loss, USF dropped to 0-3-0 on the season, while George Washington improved to 1-2-0.
"It wasn't good enough today," commented head coach Mark Carr. "With all due respect to George Washington, that's a game we should have won. At halftime, the game should have been over. We created all the chances in the world. Today wasn't good enough, it's not acceptable to be on your home field and not capitalize on those opportunities. When you dominate a game as much as we did and don't see it out, you are always asking for trouble. 1-0 is the most dangerous scoreline in soccer."
Krieser gave the Dons a 1-0 lead at 31:24, with the Green and Gold's first goal of the 2011 campaign. Krieser took control of the ball, firing it from the top of the box into the upper right corner of the net for an unassisted tally.
San Francisco nearly took a 2-0 lead into halftime, but a hard fired shot by Liana Coppola in the final seconds of the opening stanza, just missed the goal, bouncing off the cross bar.
San Francisco controlled the offense in the first half of the contest. The Dons outshot the Colonials 8-3, including taking four shots on goal.
"I am disappointed because I know our team is capable of much more," Carr added. "To quit half way through; you can't do that. Credit to George Washington, we didn't take care of the ball in our defensive part of the field and they punished us. We need to do better."
George Washington's offense came alive in the second half, taking seven shots to USF's eight. The Colonials also held a 4-2 corner kick advantage in the final 45 minutes of regulation.
With 68:46, GW's Taryn Dietrich forced an overtime period with the Colonials' first tally of the year. In front of a crowded goal, Dietrich connected on a tap from Claire Haft and sailed the ball just past the fingers of USF goalkeeper Gabby Guaiumi.
The two teams battled evenly through the opening overtime period, before George Washington put the Dons away in the second.
At 101:37, the Colonials' Alex Neal went one on one with the USF goalie, and tapped the ball into the net past the diving Don.
For the match, USF held a 16-12 shot advantage, while George Washington posted a 7-3 edge in corner kicks.
USF will return to the pitch Friday, as they take part in the Cal Tournament in Berkeley. The Dons will open the four-team event against Denver, Friday at 1:30.
