Box Score (Berkeley, CA) – San Francisco women's soccer scored early and often in a 4-1 victory against Kent State Sunday in the final day of the 2011 Cal Invitational at Edwards Stadium. The Dons (1-4-0) collect their first win of the season at the expense of the Golden Flashes (3-2-0), who suffer their second straight loss after posting three consecutive wins to start the year.
"I'm really pleased with the win," USF head coach Mark Carr said. "It had been four games and I have felt that we have deserved a win a little earlier, but sometimes that's the game of soccer. We thoroughly deserved the result today and I felt everyone contributed. We stayed disciplined, worked hard from start to finish and banged in four great goals."
USF wasted no time getting on the scoreboard as freshman striker Mackenzie Krieser scored in the third minute for her second strike in the Green and Gold. KSU responded in the 30th minute as Jaclyn Dutton provided the equalizer.
It was all San Francisco after the intermission. Freshman midfielder Jaciara Mello provided the game-winner in the 50th minute, but the Dons weren't done. Sophomore forward Christina Moberg recorded her first goal of 2011 in the 67th minute off an assist from sophomore midfielder Layla Martin and junior forward Megan Connor scored in the 84th off a feed from Krieser to seal the win for the Green and Gold. It was the first three-point match of Krieser's young career and the first for the Dons this season.
"Jaci, Joan, Tori and Tyler put the game on their back today in the mid and I was very pleased with what they did on the defensive side of the ball," Carr said. "It was nice to have three different forwards (Megan, Mack and Christina) score a goal each and this shows how much of a threat we can be up top. Halle (Bissin) and Liana (Coppola) contributed valuable time as well."
USF held a 7-5 shots advantage in the second half, but Kent State held a modest 12-11 overall advantage. The Dons got a strong day in goal from Gabby Guaiumi. The junior transfer keeper recorded five saves in securing her first career collegiate victory.
"From here, I hope our group are motivated to get back to work this week and keep the streak going next weekend," Carr said. "We now know what we are capable of and that needs to be the standard every time."
San Francisco returns to action when it travels to the state capitol to take on Sacramento State Friday, September 9. Match time against the Hornets is set for 1:30 PM
