(Seattle, Wash.) - Molly Hall posted the first multiple goal game of her career Sunday, but it wasn't enough as the University of San Francisco women's soccer team dropped a 4-2 decision to Washington in Seattle. The match closed out the final weekend of non-conference play.
With the loss, the Dons drop to 3-8 for the 2011 season.
"Today, I was really proud of Molly Hall," said head coach Mark Carr. "She has had an up and down season and today, her finishing was clinical. It now poses me a great problem as to who will be our starting forwards for our first WCC game in a few weeks. Christina (Moberg), Mac (Krieser), Megan (Connor) and Molly (Hall) have all chipped in with goals in the non-conference seaosn so its going to be down to them in training. Jaci (Mello) played unbelievably again as did Joan (Piasta) and Tyler (Campagna) in the middle of the park."
Hall struck early to give USF a 1-0 lead, netting the first goal of the afternoon at 14:31. The senior connected with a pass from freshman Jaciara Mello, before taking on the UW goalkeeper one-on-one.
Washington responded immediately, knotting the score 1-1 at 14:41, as Hillary Zevenbergen recorded a goal off of deflection.
The Huskies then rattled off two more goals before the end of the half, including one off of a penalty kick at 20:41.
"I was extremely disappointed in how our back unit defended in the first half," Carr added. "We were naïve, had poor clearances and did not deal well with their forwards. They scored three goals, which we gifted them. You cannot afford to do this at this level and continue to expect to win games. It's a concern right now, but we will go to work tomorrow to fix these problems.
In the second half, UW struck first again, at 58:59 before Hall netted her second goal of the match, and season, at 63:57. The second Dons goal was unassisted as Hall nailed the ball into the top left corner from the right side.
For the second straight match, the Dons' defense had their work cut out for this. Sunday, USF was out shot 24-7 in the match, and took just one corner kick to the Huskies' five.
"On the positive end, we attacked and moved the ball very well today," said Carr. "Our possession and movement was way better than Friday and at a very high level. Our first goal was special. Great final ball from Jaci in behind to Molly who did her job and put the ball in the net. Unfortunately, we lapsed in concentration right away and allowed UW back into the game. We addressed some things at half and I felt our defending was improved in the second half.
"The next few weeks are going to be very important. We need to get players back healthy and injury free. Now the non-conference part of the schedule is out of the way, its time to focus in on trying to win a WCC Championship. We have the ability to do this and this will be our goal. I know our team is very excited for the next part of our season. We have a lot of work to do by October 7 but we will be ready for sure."
The Dons will take a bye weekend before returning to the pitch, and the start of the West Coast Conference season October 7 as they host Loyola Marymount at Negoesco Stadium. Kick-off is slated for 7 p.m.
