(Pullman, WA) – San Francisco volleyball completed play in the 2011 Nike Cougar Challenge by sweeping Manhattan 25-16, 25-17, 25-23 Saturday morning at Bohler Gym. With the win, the Dons (5-4) have won five of their last six matches, while the Jaspers (3-5) lost their third straight in the Palouse.
Freshman middle blocker Valentina Zaloznik enjoyed a strong match for USF, recording a team-high 11 kills on .421 hitting with two blocks (one solo). Junior outside hitter Jocelyn Levig added nine kills, while junior outside hitter Alycia Cox chipped in seven kills and a team-high 12 digs. Sophomore setter Joan Caloiaro added five kills on .625 attacking to go along with 32 assists.
"We just took care of business today," USF head coach Gilad Doron said. "We did what we had to do. We served better, we hit better and everybody got a chance to play a little bit. Valentina played very well today. From the very beginning she came to play. That allowed everybody else to step in and contribute."
San Francisco clicked offensively and hit at a .314 rate for the match, including a sizzling .400 in the opening set. The Dons defense limited the Jaspers to a .138 attack percentage, including a frigid .024 in set number two.
USF returns to action when it hosts Cal Poly Wednesday, September 14. First serve against the Mustangs is set for 6:00 p.m. at War Memorial Gym.
TWO DONS NAMED ALL-TOURNAMENT: Junior outside hitter Jocelyn Levig and freshman opposite Vendula Strakova collected all-tournament honors at the Nike Cougar Challenge. Levig led the Dons with 2.91 kills on .213 hitting, while Strakova chipped in 2.67 kills on .196 hitting to go along with 1.67 digs per set.
