San Francisco Turns Away Louisiana 71-70 In Hilltop Challenge

(San Francisco) – Cody Doolin made a slashing lay-up with 26 seconds remaining and San Francisco survived a last second shot by Louisiana for a 71-70 triumph Sunday in the final game of the 2011 Hilltop Challenge at War Memorial Gym. The Dons (2-1) collect their second straight victory in their first meeting against the Ragin' Cajuns (1-2).

Senior forward Angelo Caloiaro turned in a strong night for USF with a game-high 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds for his seventh career double-double performance. Doolin finished with 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting with six rebounds for the Green and Gold, while junior guard Michael Williams added 11 points and four rebounds.

Caloiaro and Doolin both captured all-tournament honors.

In addition to Caloiaro, San Francisco got solid production from its front line. Sophomore forward Cole Dickerson scored nine points with four rebounds and two assists off the bench in 21 minutes, while junior forward Perris Blackwell was very active with eight points and three boards.

USF shot at a brisk .453 (24-53) clip from the field for the game and made half of their 22 second-half attempts. The Dons did a nice job defensively on UL, limiting the Cajuns to a .377 (26-69) success rate, .214 (6-28) from 3-point range.

J.J. Thomas and led the way for Louisiana with 15 points and seven rebounds. Elfrid Payton added 14 points and six assists and both earned all-tournament team selection.

San Francisco returns to action when it hosts Bay Area rival San Jose State Wednesday, November 16. Tip-off against the Spartans is set for 8:00 PM from War Memorial Gym. USF's women's team hosts Cal Poly in the first game of the doubleheader, starting at 6:00 PM. Both games will be carried live on USFDons.com, courtesy of Stretch Internet.
