SAN FRANCISCO — The Dons downed Memphis in a dramatic five-set match to win the USF Asics/Powerade Challenge title on Saturday night at War Memorial Gym.
USF bested Memphis 25-21, 22-25, 18-25, 25-10 and 15-11 after sweeping Providence 25-13, 25-18 and 25-19 earlier in the day.
Sophomore setter
Joan Caloiaro was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player after leading the Dons to a 3-0 record with an average of 11.50 assists per set. Caloiaro also averaged 2.80 digs and nearly one kill a set, while totaling seven service aces and two blocks. The Saratoga, Calif. native flirted with a double-double against Memphis after finishing with 49 assists, eight kills and eight digs.
Outside hitters
Jocelyn Levig and
Vendula Strakova were named to the all-tournament team after stellar weekends. It's the second-straight all-tournament honor for Levig, who turned in 2.36 kills and 1.64 digs per set with seven service aces. Levig's 11 kills were a match-high for the Dons against Providence.
Strakova, playing in her first three games for the Dons, put up 3.18 kills and 2.00 digs per set. The Czech Republic native led the Dons in kills against Memphis with 13 to go along with nine digs.
Sophomore
Malina Terrell came up big for the Dons against Memphis after starting the match with seven kills in seven swings. The middle blocker finished with 11 kills on .600 hitting.
The Dons take their three-game winning streak to Pullman, Wash. next for the Nike Cougar Challenge Tournament, which begins on Friday, Sept. 9.
