(Portland, OR) – San Francisco led early, trailed late but rallied for a 72-71 West Coast Conference victory against Portland Saturday afternoon at the Chiles Center. The Dons (13-9, 3-5 WCC) complete the season sweep against the Pilots (5-15, 2-5 WCC) in the second game between the two teams in 10 days.
Sophomore guard
Cody Doolin led a balanced scoring effort with an game-high 15 points and made the key play in the game late. With a 66-63 lead and the Pilots rallying, Doolin stole a rebound and made a reverse lay-up for a 68-63 advantage with 1:23 to go. The Texan then made a pair of free throws with 17 seconds remaining to put the Dons up 72-69.
Junior forward
Cole Dickerson added 13 points on 5-for-6 shooting with seven rebounds in 26 minutes. Senior forward
Angelo Caloiaro chipped in 12 points, while senior guard
Rashad Green had 11.
San Francisco trailed 39-32 at the intermission but opened the second half with a 15-6 run, taking a 47-45 lead with 12:45 remaining as sophomore guard
Dominique O'Connor capped a personal 8-0 run with a driving lay-up. USF did not trail from there although the Pilots cut it to a one possession game five times in the final 90 seconds.
USF shot .453 (24-53) from the field and limited the Pilots to a .396 (21-53) rate. The Dons defense forced 20 turnovers and USF, the WCC's leader in steals, swiped 12. Portland held a 39-30 rebound advantage, including a 15-10 edge on the offensive glass, but San Francisco out-scored Portland 32-28 in the paint.
San Francisco returns to action when it travels to ancient Bay Area rival Santa Clara Thursday, January 26 from the Leavey Event Center. Game time against the Broncos is set for 7:00 PM in a contest carried live on Comcast SportsNet California.
