SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. -- Fans caught their first glimpse of USF's basketball teams Friday night at the inaugural HoopSFest held at Memorial Gymasium, and it was evident to all both teams have one thing in common heading into the 2012-13 season -- they both can dance!
A
dance-off between both teams wrapped up an evenings worth of festivities that ushered in the season for the enthusiastic crowd assembled in Memorial Gymnasium.
The women's team served as judges for the
men's dunk contest, which was won by redshirt freshman
Mark Tollefsen, who fought off teammates Tim Derksen, De'End Parker and Frank Rogers for the title. Tollefsen's winning dunk might have been upstaged by Joe Edmonds
pass from the rafters intended to set up a Derksen dunk. The ball took one bounce off the floor and found the bottom of the net much to the delight of the crowd. Derksen also earned big points from the crowd by donning a Bill Cartwright No. 24 USF jersey for his final dunk attempt.
Along with a dunk contest, both the men's and women's squads participating in various shooting contests, with senior
Mel Khlok leading the charge from long range. She led her team to victory in the first contest of the evening alongside
Chris Adams.
Other highlights of the night included appearances from the Dons Band, the USF Spirit squad and mascot Don Francisco. Numerous USF basktball almni were also in attendance, including Hall of Famer Mary Hile-Nepfel.
