SAN DIEGO – Despite the USF men's soccer team striking first and owning a 13-9 shot advantage, the Dons succumbed to San Diego after a late goal gave the Toreros a 2-1 edge at Torero Stadium on Friday night.
USF found its way into the lead when
Miguel Aguilar's shot found its mark in the 25th minute, and the Dons held serve into the second half of action. Aguilar's low sliding strike into the right corner of the goal was assisted by
David Romney, his second assist on the season. Aguilar and
Liam Kelly both finished the night with five shots apiece for the Dons.
USD's Patrick Wallen countered for the Toreros off a header to even the score in the 57
th minute, and that is where the tally stayed for much of the remainder of the match.
Late into the contest with the score locked at 1-1, Eli Gilbraith-Knapp earned the game-winning goal for the Toreros in the 86
th minute of action. His 30-yard blast scooted past senior goalkeeper
Brendan Roslund and USD was able to hold on for the victory, handing the Dons their second-consecutive loss.
USF drops to 5-6-2 on the season, and 3-4 in West Coast Conference action. With the win, the Toreros move to 9-6-0 (7-1-0, WCC).
The Dons continue their weekend trip through Southern California with a stop at Loyola Marymount for a 2:00 p.m. match in Los Angeles.
