
Taylor Travis Paces Men's Golf Team to Fourth-Place Finish in Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The San Francisco men's golf team, led by senior Taylor Travis, finished fourth in the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic today. Twelve teams from nine different conferences were represented in the three-day tournament, which was held at the par-71, 7023-yard Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame.
Sophomore Jobim Carlos, from Manila, Philippines, closed out day the first round of action with an impressive one-under 70 to tie for third with the Michigan State duo of Carson Castellani and Matthew Moseley. USF's Cory McElyea, a junior from Santa Cruz, Calif., finished close behind at even par, to tie for sixth. USF was fourth in the team standings with a score of eight-over 292 after the first 18 holes.
Overnight frost led to a two-hour delay before the tournament's second round could commence. After the late start, Travis, a senior from Fremont, Calif., carded a one-under-par 70 to finish in a three-way tie for seventh. The trio posted two-day totals of one-over 143 with McElyea (71-72) and Michigan State's Mitch Rutledge (75-68) joining Travis. As a team, the Dons climbed into third with a 292-285–577.
The third and final day ended with Travis carding a steady 54-hole tally of 72-71-73–216 to tie for fifth with Minnesota's Erik Van Rooyen and Michigan State's Moseley. After struggling with a six-over-par round on the second day of action, Carlos regrouped with a final round 72 to finish with a three-day total of 219 to tie for 15th. McElyea finished in a tie for 21st in the individual standings. Individual medalist honors went to Thomas Bass of UNC-Wilmington.
Overall, USF posted their second-best finish of the fall, a fourth-place showing. The Dons finished three strokes back from tournament champions of Michigan State, with a score of 292-285-295–872.Michigan State concluded the tournament with a total of 869, followed by Houston and UNC-Wilmington's 870 to tie for second. USF rounded out the top four and bested their closest competitors from UT-Arlington by four strokes.
The Dons will return to action in Alister Mackenzie Invitational hosted by the No. 1-ranked Cal men's golf team Oct. 15 at the Meadow Club in Fairfax, Calif.
