SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - The San Francisco women's cross country team heads to Madison, Wisconsin for the Adidas Wisconsin Invitational this Friday, October 12 to race in their most competitive non-championship meet this season.
Twenty of the top 30 teams in the country are scheduled to compete in the Invitational, including six of the top 10, including No. 2 Arizona, No. 3 Washington, No. 5 Iowa State, No. 7 Stanford, No. 9 Cornell and No. 10 Michigan State.
The Dons are sending eight runners to compete, including Elena Burkard, Eva Krchova, Chloe Treleven, Alice Baker, Maor Tiyouri, Kate Jamboretz, Mary Sandri and Madeline Haupert.
This will be the third time USF has competed in the Wisconsin Invitational. In 2011, the women's team finished 17th in the prestigious race, beating six ranked teams, including the only other West Coast Conference team in the race, then-No. 27 BYU. USF came in just one spot behind Providence, ranked No. 2 in national rankings heading into the week. Laura Suur was the front-runner for the Dons, placing 43rd with a time of 20:55 in the 6k. Three Dons set personal best times over the 6K course: Treleven (21:04, 60), Sophoe Curl (21:09, 69) and Alice Baker (21:42, 158).
In 2010, USF finished in 8th place, with all seven runners setting new personal records. Five of the seven teams that finished ahead of the Dons were nationally ranked, with USF finishing well in front of nationally ranked Wisconsin.
The women's side experienced their best finish this season in the Toledo Bubble Buster on Sept. 21. In a packed field that included four top 25 teams, No. 23 San Francisco, led by Burkard, finished in second place. The Dons beat No. 18 Toledo and No. 22 Syracuse in a field that included twelve of fourteen teams that were ranked in the top ten in their region.
This year's race starts at 12:00 p.m PT at the Thomas Zimmer Cross Country Course at the University Ridge Golf Course.
