SAN FRANCISCO – Despite an eye-popping 28 digs by libero
Rebecca Kopilovitch, the San Francisco volleyball team fell to Saint Mary's in three sets on Jewish Heritage Appreciation Night at War Memorial Gym.
The second set was ripe for the taking for the Dons, who found themselves with a 21-18 lead late in the set after Ester De Vries powered down a kill with the assist from
Leanna Ludes. The Gaels, however, put together a string of five-straight points with Lauren Corp at the serve to take a 23-21 lead. Saint Mary's closed the frame with a 25-22 win to earn the 2-0 set advantage heading into halftime.
USF trailed throughout the first and third sets to go away from the evening with a 15-13 overall record (6-9 WCC) as the Gaels move to 16-10 (11-4 WCC) with the sweep. Saint Mary's has posted 11 three-set victories on the season, and they are riding a three-match streak of road sweeps after doing the same to Gonzaga and Portland.
Along with Kopilovitch's gaudy stats, the Dons had two double-digit kill performances by
Valentina Zaloznik and
Jocelyn Levig. Zaloznik posted a .450 hitting percentage on the night, and Ludes finished with 36 set assists and nine digs.
Malina Terrell chipped in on four blocks for USF.
The Dons close out the regular season on Saturday at 1 p.m., against Loyola Marymount as the team honors the contributions of five USF seniors participating in their last collegiate match.
